WHAT IN THE WORLD IS SKIN FLORA? Wrestlers Need To Know

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

For wrestlers, parents, and coaches, the end of the season is a stressful time. This is our last effort to give ourselves an edge as we approach our league, state, and other championships As the season comes to an end, we become more aware of what we consume, our rest schedule, and how to avoid injuries. Another thing we pay close attention to is our skin. Sometimes this is overlooked. The countless stories of someone being disqualified from a postseason tournament due to a skin infection are far too common.

What in the world is flora?

Flora is the natural microorganisms that live on your skin. The three primary sources of flora are:

  • Fungus

  • Bacteria

  • Virus

Having a balanced skin flora can help prevent skin infections. Sometimes our skin is weakened or our flora is out of balance. As a result, we are more prone to skin infections. Therefore, we advise wrestlers not to use antibacterial soaps exclusively. Most antibacterial soaps are harsh and remove the bacteria that regulate the balance of our skin's flora, which enables fungal and viral infections to flourish. The bacteria on your skin are necessary in order to compete for space with the fungi and viruses, which creates a healthy and balanced flora.
